Don’t Forget About Your Gums!
We recommend that our patients visit our office every four to six months for an oral hygiene examination and cleaning. Between appointments, it is important that you are continuously monitoring and caring for your oral health. This includes inspecting and cleaning not only your teeth but also your gums. Many patients are surprised to learn that they may not be experiencing issues with decay but problems with their gums. Read on to learn more.
National Gum Care Month
September is National Gum Care Month when we share the importance of monitoring and caring for your gums. More than half of American adults will suffer from gum disease at some point in their lifetime. Caring for your gums properly now can prevent the development of an issue in the future. Gum disease occurs when an infection develops in the gum tissue. If it is not treated in a timely manner, it will continue to progress until it reaches the jawbone. When this occurs, you will begin to experience complications with your teeth, such as loose teeth and, eventually, teeth that need to be extracted.
Signs of Gum Problems
Between appointments in our office, it is extremely important that you regularly check your teeth and gums. While gum disease often remains undetected without a dental exam, there are certain warning signs your mouth gives off to let you know that you may be experiencing a problem or complication. If you notice any of the warning signs below, be sure to contact our office to schedule an appointment:
- Red, swollen gums
- Receding gums
- Recurring bad breath
- Bleeding gums
- Loose teeth
The best way to care for your gums is to brush thoroughly and floss as we recommend. If you have any questions about how to floss or brush properly, we would love to help you. If you need an examination, be sure to contact our office, located in the Woodlands, TX, to schedule an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
