Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses administered medication to help dental patients relax while they are receiving dental care. We know that we have patients who have not visited our office in years for a routine hygiene examination as well as patients who have never scheduled the treatments we recommended. Most of these patients experience dental anxiety and fear over visiting our office and receiving treatment. Sedation dentistry can be beneficial to these types of patients. Sedation dentistry can also be helpful to patients who:
- Had a prior negative dental experience
- Cannot sit still for long periods of time
- Need a lengthy or more involved treatment
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
- Are sensitive to the sights, smells and sounds of the dentist office
What is the Process for Sedation Dentistry?
Please contact our office and be honest about your feelings. We cannot help you feel more comfortable or offer sedation if we don’t know the extent of your anxiety. We offer nitrous oxide as well as oral sedation that is NOT administered with a shot or IV. Patients remain awake during the entire procedure and are able to understand and answer questions. When taking oral sedation, patients are not allowed to drive to or from the appointment. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are both painless options and help patients feel completely relaxed.
